How do you start off the new year?

People always make some incredible resolutions and goals as the year begins.  They commit for a short amount of time, but by February, they have already fallen off the band wagon.  So if you have been the person that has never been able to follow through with a goal from the beginning of the year, it is time to try differently.

Instead of making a goal for the year, make a 30 day goal.  For the next 30 days, what is a realistic amount of time you could devote to exercise?  Whether this figure is 5 minutes or 50, you need to think about an amount of time that you can commit to!  Keep in mind that your goal is not about gaining muscle or loosing weight.  Keep it focused on increasing the amount of time you exercise and move throughout the day.  If you start with a five minute goal, then how tangible is that?  What if you decided to exercise 5 more minutes every day for the next 30 days?

So you are going to do this, right?  5 minutes for the next 30 days.  So what do you do?  Walk for five minutes.  Squat for five minutes.  Jump rope for five minutes.  Push up for five minutes.  Pull up for five minutes.  Do jumping jacks for five minutes.  Ride a bike for five minutes.  Walk in place for five minutes!  Do all or some of these.  It matters less right now what you do.  The important part is that you commit to five minutes every day!

Any time you can fit this in is the best time.  Now, what if you could start your day off with a win?  Something positive?  Feel accomplished?  Set your alarm five minutes earlier for the next 30 days and move for only five minutes!  See this is not complicated.  It is simple.  You might not gain a lot of muscle or burn a lot of fat, but you will establish a powerful habit that will carry you the rest of your life.

If you miss one day forget about it.  Forgive yourself and move on!  Get help from your friend, spouse, significant other, or someone else to help you be accountable.  If you have to stay at home, then agree with a friend to message you at a certain time everyday to check in to make it happen!  You can do this.  30 days!

After thirty days, go for 10 minutes a day!  Do not over think it.  Pick simple movements to focus on.  You could also download my 5, 10, and 15 minute programs here on my site if you want to.  The first month 5 minutes, the second month 10 minutes, and the third month 15 minutes.  But hey, no obligation.  The important point here is you start with the 5 minute a day challenge for the next 30 days.  If you can also start making dietary changes along with this, imagine how you can improve your health over the next 30, 60, 90 days?

So there you go!  Start anew, start fresh, start strong.  Make 2021 a year of awesomeness!
